How to Build a Performance Marketing Strategy for a D2C Brand

To build a performance marketing strategy for a D2C brand, I define the commercial goal, calculate affordable acquisition costs, understand the customer, choose focused channels, verify tracking and test offers systematically. I scale when acquisition, contribution and operational capacity support it.

Direct-to-consumer brands own the customer relationship, but also carry the costs of winning and retaining that customer. In my work, a useful strategy connects advertising with product margins, website experience and repeat purchases.

1. Set Goals and Acquisition Limits

Choose a specific objective: profitable first orders, more new customers or a controlled product launch. Write down the timeframe, budget and contribution you need to retain.

Customer acquisition cost (CAC) is acquisition spending divided by new customers acquired. I set its ceiling using order economics, rather than copying another brand's ROAS target.

Example I use: An illustrative €100 order might leave €40 after product costs, fulfilment, payment fees and expected return costs. Reserving €10 towards overhead and profit leaves €30 for acquisition. If that allowance must also cover creative or agency costs, paid-media allowance is lower.

2. Understand the Customer and Offer

Read reviews, support questions and purchase feedback. Identify the problem customers want solved, their alternatives and what delays their decision.

3. Choose Your Channel Mix

I prioritise channels based on demand, product suitability and production capacity. A small budget usually benefits from fewer simultaneous paid tests.

ChannelUseful roleCheck before investing
Meta AdsVisual discovery, product education and purchasesCan you demonstrate the product with varied creative?
Google AdsCapture searches and shopping demandAre relevant searches, product feeds and purchase tracking ready?
Amazon AdsReach marketplace shoppersAre listings, stock and marketplace margins competitive?
SEOBuild useful product and category visibilityCan you create helpful pages and allow time to learn?
Email and SMSSupport conversion and repeat purchasesDo you have permission, useful messages and customer segments?

4. Verify Measurement Before Launch

Place test orders and check purchase events, transaction IDs, value and currency. Reconcile results against store orders and refunds; prevent duplicate purchase events.

5. Test Creative and Landing Pages Together

Build each test around a question, such as whether a product demonstration answers a buying objection better than a lifestyle-led introduction.

6. Plan Retention Alongside Acquisition

Build a useful post-purchase journey: product guidance, support, an appropriately timed review request and a relevant repeat-purchase message.

7. Review Results and Scale Deliberately

Review tracking and fulfilment problems promptly. Assess acquisition cost, contribution and customer quality over a window that allows for conversion delays and returns.
